Recently, the Technology and Finance Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the China Environmental Protection Industry Association jointly released the “Report on the Development Status of China’s Environmental Protection Industry (2022)” (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”). This is the sixth consecutive year since 2017 that China has released this report.

The report data is sourced from the National Environmental Service Industry Financial Statistics and Guidance Survey of Key Enterprises in the National Environmental Protection Industry commissioned by the Technology and Finance Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China.

It involves nearly 18000 samples of environmental protection enterprises (including listed environmental protection companies and environmental protection companies listed on the New Third Board), with a sample size increase of 15.3% compared to the previous year.

The overall development status of China’s environmental protection industry reflected in the report is as follows:

1、 The overall scale of the environmental protection industry has maintained growth, and the contribution of the industry to the development of the national economy has further increased

According to statistics from the China Environmental Protection Industry Association, the operating revenue of the national environmental protection industry in 2021 was approximately 2.18 trillion yuan, an increase of approximately 11.8% compared to 2020, and a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percentage points.

Among them, the operating revenue of environmental services is about 1.42 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of about 18.3%, and a year-on-year increase of 8.6 percentage points. During the five years from 2017 to 2021, the annual compound growth rate of environmental protection industry revenue was 12.8%, higher than the GDP growth rate of the same period. The ratio of the total revenue of the national environmental protection industry to gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021 was 1.9%, an increase of 1.15 percentage points compared to 2011. The direct contribution rate of the environmental protection industry to the national economy is 1.8%, an increase of 0.65 percentage points compared to 2011. In 2022, the operating revenue of the environmental protection industry was approximately 2.22 trillion yuan, which has become an important force in the green economy.
