The Internet, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and other new-generation information and communication technologies have become part of our way of life and production.

In order to store and process the massive data, the number and installed scale of data centers are constantly expanding.

According to the report, in 2019, China had about 74,000 data centers of various types, with a total size of 2.27 million racks.

As a rapidly growing industry in energy use, data center’s energy consumption and green development process are constantly attracting social attention.

In 2019, the total power consumption of China’s data center industry is about 60 billion to 70 billion kilowatt-hours, accounting for about 0.8% to 1% of the total power consumption of the country.

With the deepening of the information age, it is estimated that the total energy consumption of China’s data centers in 2030 is expected to double compared with that in 2019, reaching about 1.5 to 2 percent of total social electricity consumption.

The energy consumption problem of data center industry has gradually attracted worldwide attention.

According to the report, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has jointly published research reports on energy consumption in data centers in 2007, 2016, and 2020 with Stanford University and other institutions.

A number of domestic organizations have also released analysis reports on energy consumption.

Energy conservation and emission reduction has become a topic of common concern in the industry.

However, China’s data center industry still faces many problems in the further expansion of the application of renewable energy, such as insufficient attention to the expansion of the application of renewable energy in the data center industry, the identification mechanism of the use of renewable energy is not perfect, and the enthusiasm of renewable energy generation enterprises to participate in electricity trading fluctuates greatly.
