China to promote garbage classification in cities
On Thursday March 30th, The State Council issued a new plan to promote garbage classification in cities with the aim of increasing the recycling rate to 35% by 2020.
Cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing and all capitals of provincial regions, will be the first ones required to sort garbage by 2020. In order to do this, they are required to issue their own set of regulations concerning standards on how to categorize garbage, and on methods on how to collect, transport and dispose garbage, by the end 2017.
The State Council’s plan emphasize that the recycling of toxic, kitchen and recyclable garbage should be given priority. It also mentions that charging mechanism, and related laws and regulations for garbage disposal, will be upgraded to reflect the principle of “who pollute pays”.
