Beijing steps up its efforts to curb air pollution
The Municipal Commission of City Management announced last Thursday (23rd of March) that Beijing aiming to cut coal consumption by 30 % and to keep total coal consumption under 7 million tonnes this year.
Local authorities in Beijing have also announced that they will invest 18 billion yuan (2.6 billion U.S. dollars) to curb air pollution in the city in 2017. According to Xinhuanet, a part of Xinhua News Agency – a major Chinese news agency, the authorities is expected to shut-down about 500 manufacturers, to further restrict heavy diesel vehicles from entering Beijing, close several coal-fired boilers and to replace low-quality coal with clean coal in rural areas.
By the end of October a new natural gas pipeline transferring gas from Shaanxi Province to Beijing is scheduled to become operative.
